In new photos from May 17, Miley has a series of lacerations on the inside of her wrist, which experts believe are fresh cut marks. “It looks like there has been some self-cutting,” Dr. Jeff Gardere, chief contributor to HealthGuru.com, EXCLUSIVELY tells HollywoodLife.com. “It’s not about wanting to kill yourself, but about being depressed, anxious, having so much stress in your life that you resort to self-cutting to bring yourself back into reality or remove yourself from anxiety and sadness.”

Like other psychological disorders, self-harming requires professional treatment, sometimes even rehab. “Miley could meet with a therapist regularly, but i’m not sure she thinks she has a problem,” says Dr. Gilda Carle, 30 Second Therapist for Today.com.

Even if Miley doesn’t believe she needs treatment, she is acutely aware of her self-destructive behavior and doesn’t try to hide her scars from photographers or her many social media followers. “Scars remind us of where we’ve been. not where we’re going,” Miley tweeted on April 26.

“If she can remember how miserable she was to have generated the scars, maybe she can use them as a learning experience for which she’s deciding to grow,” explains Dr. Gilda.

Though Miley appears to have the world at her finger tips with a promising career and a hunky boyfriend, Dr. Gardere says it wouldn’t be shocking for someone like Miley to self-injure. “Age doesn’t matter, but we do see this behavior in younger people who are going through different phases of life which can be very extreme,” he says. “I think being in Hollywood puts you at more risk given the nature of the extreme stress that you face.”

Sadly, cutting isn’t the only destructive behavior that has plagued the brunette beauty in recent months. According to earlier reports, Miley has lost 25 pounds in only two months and has limited her calorie intake to less than 1000 per day!

“When you lose a lot of weight or you cut, it’s a control mechanism,” notes Dr. Gilda. “People who take control in these ways do so in a very destrucive manner and that’s what the problem is.”

We sincerely hope that Miley gets the help she so badly needs.
